USTM Medical College Stalls Amid Missing Meghalaya State Funding

Shillong: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya is grappling with financial uncertainty after the state government failed to deliver promised support for its medical college project. Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque confirmed the institution moved forward with the project based on an agreement for an interest-free loan to be repaid over 20 years. In return, the university committed to reserving nearly 50 percent of its seats for local students from Meghalaya.

Without the anticipated state funds, the university has relied on bank loans and tuition fees to maintain operations. The institution currently supports over 1,100 staff members while offering discounted fees for students under the quota system, creating significant pressure on its budget. This financial shortfall has forced a slowdown in a major 10 lakh square foot infrastructure project that has been under development for four years.

Despite these challenges, the university continues to provide healthcare services and reserve seats for local residents. Hoque noted that timely government intervention is essential if the institution is to reach its goal of becoming a regional center of excellence, especially as it prepares to launch super-speciality services in the coming months.

Regarding recent legal scrutiny and political debate involving the Assam government, the chancellor opted to remain focused on the institutional mission rather than external criticism. He said, "I concentrate on my own work and on making the mission successful." Hoque expressed confidence that the university will navigate these difficulties through the collective effort of its 6,000 students and 2,000 staff members.
