Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC) has officially launched an indefinite inter-district economic blockade along all National Highways traversing Naga-inhabited areas in Manipur. This move follows the organization's dissatisfaction with the state government's inability to secure the release of six individuals who remain in captivity, allegedly held by Kuki militant groups.

The dispute originated on May 14, when the UNC issued an ultimatum demanding the safe release of 20 hostages purportedly held at Leilon Vaiphei and Sapermaina Kuki villages. While 14 individuals were successfully released on the morning of May 15, the status of the remaining six, which includes two members of the clergy, remains unknown. The council notes that they granted the state government multiple deadline extensions to facilitate rescue operations, but authorities have yet to locate the captives.
