Imphal: The Manipur International Youth Centre gathered on August 30 to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. Activists and experts filled the Ojha Sanajaoba Memorial Hall at the National Research Centre Building in Canchipur to address the state's persistent vanishing cases.
MIYC president M.K. Saroj Khan told the crowd the event serves as a push to keep these cold cases in the public eye. He emphasized that families living in the dark about their missing relatives face a massive human rights crisis. "The day should not be viewed merely as an international observance but as an occasion to remember those whose whereabouts remain unknown and to draw attention to the anguish faced by their families," Khan said.
Dr. Yumnam Premananda Singh, head of the law department at Manipur University, joined the discussion to break down the legal hurdles involved. He argued that accountability remains the only path forward to protect the rights of victims and their grieving relatives. The group intends for this platform to spark serious debate on the social and legal failures surrounding involuntary disappearances in Manipur.
