Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a 24-hour total shutdown across all Naga areas in response to the recovery of six Naga men who had been missing since May 13. Their remains were discovered on Wednesday near Kharam Vaiphei village. The protest is scheduled to run from 6:00 AM on June 11 to 6:00 AM on June 12 to demand justice for the victims.
The group claims the six victims were abducted by Leilon Vaiphei villagers and militants from the Kuki National Front-President (KNF-P). In a statement released on June 10, the UNC described the state of the remains as a clear breach of human rights. "The prayerful expectation of the Naga peoples after release of the 14 Kuki detainees in the evening yesterday, is confronted with the shocking fact that the 6 innocent Nagas taken hostage by the Leilon Vaiphei Villagers and the KNF(P) militants, on 13th May, 2026 have been recovered not only as lifeless human remains but also in highly mutilated and dismembered conditions," the council stated.
The UNC has refused to accept the remains until the governments of Manipur and India address a list of specific demands. These include the immediate arrest of those involved in the abduction and killings, the termination of the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militant groups, and the official designation of the KNF-P as a terrorist organization. Furthermore, the council is calling for the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, citing concerns regarding her connection to the KNF-P leadership.
The incident traces back to May 13, when 18 Naga civilians were abducted from the Leilon Vaiphei area. While most were eventually released, these six individuals remained missing until the discovery of their bodies this week.
