United Committee Manipur Marks 25 Years of Protecting State Borders

Imphal: The United Committee Manipur hit a quarter-century milestone today. Leaders gathered at the Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal East to mark the organization's 25th Foundation Day. They stood united. Representatives from various civil society groups and Meira Paibi organizations attended the event to renew their vow to protect Manipur’s borders.

UCM president Y.K. Dhiren led the proceedings. He asked every community in the region to pull together for a stronger state. Dhiren also honored those killed during the June 18, 2001, uprising against the ceasefire agreement between the Centre and the NSCN-IM. Their deaths sparked the formation of the group on July 3, 2001.

General Secretary Santa Nahakpam addressed the crowd about the organization's history and ongoing struggles. He claimed the current state crisis stems from illegal immigration and urged collective action to keep communal harmony alive. Founder president Sapamcha Jadumani expressed deep frustration with the authorities. He alleged that "successive state governments had failed to adequately safeguard Manipur’s territorial interests" and criticized the current leadership for ignoring public alarm.

The group held a candle-lighting ceremony to remember the 18 people who died during the initial protests. They also honored victims' families and hosted cultural shows. The committee remains focused on its original goal: defending the territorial integrity of Manipur against outside threats and internal instability.
