Guwahati: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex in Khanikar, Dibrugarh, on Tuesday to assess construction progress. During his inspection, Sonowal reviewed infrastructure development and offered recommendations to ensure the project meets its goal of becoming Assam’s premier multi-sports venue.

Spanning 104 bighas of land, the massive project carries a total estimated investment of Rs 233 crore for its initial development. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the first phase on January 30, 2026. This completed section already hosts a football field, a swimming pool, an indoor stadium, synthetic athletic tracks, and various courts for tennis, volleyball, and badminton, alongside athlete hostels and a VIP block.

Officials have sanctioned an additional Rs 209 crore for Phase II of the project. This expansion will boost the stadium's total capacity to 35,000 spectators. Sonowal stated that the facility serves as a vital milestone for the region, noting that the world-class infrastructure will provide new training opportunities for local talent and help position Dibrugarh as a major sporting destination for the northeast.
