Aizawl: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma have jointly launched the Mizoram Ginger Unique Selling Proposition Sustainable Cultivation and Value Chain Development Project. With a total outlay of ₹189.79 crore, the initiative aims to elevate the state's ginger production to global standards through improved farming practices and infrastructure development.

During the virtual inauguration ceremony held in Aizawl, officials highlighted that ginger remains a cornerstone of the local economy. The project focuses on sustainable cultivation, farm mechanization, solarization, and rigorous quality control. Notably, the initiative is supported by a ₹30.13 crore allocation from the North Eastern Council to specifically enhance post-harvest management and processing capabilities.

The infrastructure plan includes the establishment of a major processing hub in Mualkawi, located in the Champhai district, which serves as the primary ginger-producing region in the state. Additional smaller processing units will be developed in Tualcheng, Vaphai, and Zotlang. These facilities are designed to be managed by a combination of large investors and local farmers' societies to ensure community engagement and economic growth.

Mizoram ginger has long been recognized for its low fiber content, superior aroma, and high levels of essential oils. With the Thingpui and Thinglaidum varieties already holding Geographical Indication tags since 2021 and meeting international chemical residue standards as of 2025, this new project is set to further solidify the market potential of the crop. Construction is expected to conclude within the year, with full-scale processing operations scheduled to commence in 2026.
