Aizawl: A steel bridge worth over Rs 5 crore is nearly finished on the border connecting Manipur’s Churachandpur district with Mizoram and Myanmar. This structure appeared without state approval or environmental clearance. Workers built it using prefabricated beams and heavy cranes. The deck installation is happening now.
State officials worry about the lack of oversight. The bridge sits in a sensitive area. Fears grow that this project supports illegal cross-border movement. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh sounded the alarm on social media, telling authorities to take note. He said, "The district administration and police are currently assessing the security implications and monitoring the site to address the unauthorised infrastructure development."
This follows a similar incident from May 2024. Then, the Manipur government stopped an illegal RCC bridge construction between Chandel and Churachandpur districts. That earlier project sparked tensions when local protesters blocked security forces. Police and local officials are now investigating this new site to figure out who built it and why.
