Imphal: The Ukhrul Forest Division officially launched the third edition of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign on World Environment Day 2026. Divisional Forest Officer Laishram Gitla led the initiative, which sets an ambitious goal to plant 247,170 saplings throughout the district. The launch event took place at the Eden Home Orphanage in Lanaitang, where officials emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship.

During her address at the orphanage, Gitla drew connections between environmental endurance and human character. She stated, "Nature and humanity share the exact same story of resilience." She encouraged the young participants to draw strength from their personal challenges, viewing themselves as future protectors of the local forests and the broader environment.

The campaign relies heavily on community involvement. Twenty-three villages supported by the KfW-funded COSFOM project committed to planting 227,170 saplings. These efforts focus specifically on watershed management, spring-shed rejuvenation, and community-led conservation. Additional distribution events were held at the Mini Secretariat Complex, involving various district officials and department heads who provided native saplings to the public.

In a separate collaborative effort, the Forest Division partnered with local NGO VVD and the Assam Rifles to promote water conservation. Held at the Somsai Garrison, this program focused on spring rejuvenation and groundwater recharge. Participants included Brigadier Amit Kumar Sharma, Commander of the 10 Sector Assam Rifles, along with other senior military officers. The initiative highlights a broad, integrated approach to regional reforestation and environmental sustainability.
