Agartala: Special Branch officers of the Tripura Police detained two men from Maharashtra at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala on Wednesday after uncovering Rs 1.68 crore in unaccounted cash. Authorities identified the suspects as 36-year-old Dattatry Thakram Virkar and 21-year-old Sajal Sachin Devkar. Following the seizure, both the individuals and the money were transferred to the Income Tax and Customs departments for a deeper probe.
Police noted that the suspects had made frequent trips between Maharashtra and Agartala since June 4. Investigators believe the men acted as couriers, arriving in the city to drop off bags filled with cash before flying back to Maharashtra on the same day. A senior official stated, "The men would arrive in Agartala carrying bags containing cash, deliver them at designated locations within the city and return to Maharashtra by flight within a few hours."
The investigation has revealed suspicious operational patterns, including the use of new mobile phones for every trip to maintain secrecy. The carriers reportedly did not possess the passwords to open the bags they transported, as these credentials were shared directly between parties at the origin and destination points. Officials are now working to identify the source of the funds, the intended recipients, and the extent of the organised network behind these illegal movements.
