Kohima: Tuensang observed World Environment Day at the CBLT Multi-Purpose Hall on June 5, focusing on the theme of climate responsibility. The event was organized by the Tuensang Forest Division and the Onou Foundation, with support from local government departments, civil society groups, and Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School.
Divisional Forest Officer Dr. Prabhat Kumar identified human activity as a primary threat to the environment. He noted that "deforestation and pollution as major contributors to climate change." To counter these issues, he encouraged students and residents to minimize plastic consumption and commit to planting and nurturing new trees.
Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa echoed the call for personal responsibility, noting that "individual actions, however small, can contribute significantly to environmental protection." She pointed out that historical weather stability has shifted into unpredictable patterns, necessitating a change in how the community handles resources. She specifically advocated for household waste segregation and praised the Nagaland government for its recent ban on nicotine-based food products.
The event included creative competitions and a tree-planting drive organized under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign. Participants planted saplings around the school campus, marking a symbolic commitment to the long-term preservation of the local landscape.
