Agartala: Medical professionals at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital have achieved a significant milestone by performing a rare and highly complex surgery to treat severe liver complications and portal hypertension. This landmark operation marks the first time such a specialized procedure has been successfully conducted within Tripura, offering a new local alternative to patients who previously had to travel outside the state for advanced care.

The patient, a 42-year-old man from the Gomati district, had been suffering from chronic liver ailments characterized by severe abdominal pain, swelling, and recurrent vomiting of blood. After being evaluated by gastro-surgeon Dr. Dipankar Shankar Mitra, he was diagnosed with non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. To manage the condition, a multidisciplinary team determined that a splenectomy combined with a splenorenal vascular shunt was necessary to stabilize the patient's declining health.

Given the patient's fragile physical state, he was transferred to the Cardiovascular Department on April 6, 2026, where he underwent a month of intensive stabilization. On May 13, a ten-member surgical team led by Dr. Kanaknarayan Bhattacharya and Dr. Dipankar Shankar Mitra successfully completed the five-hour procedure. The surgery involved removing the damaged spleen and creating a vascular shunt between the portal and renal veins. Specialized support from cardiovascular anesthesia experts and a dedicated team of technicians ensured the operation's success.
