Agartala: Tripura just jumped into the future of transit. Chief Minister Manik Saha flagged off the Northeast's first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit train at Agartala Railway Station this Saturday. The Northeast Frontier Railway expects the new route to cut travel times and boost daily links between Tripura and southern Assam.

Regular trips start July 6. The train skips Sundays but runs the other six days. It carries 3,600 passengers across 12 modern stainless steel coaches. Passengers get perks like CCTV, bio-toilets, and GPS-tracked arrival updates.

Chief Minister Saha called the rollout a major win for the state. He said the new service would offer passengers "faster, safer and more comfortable travel" while meeting the demands of a modern transport system.

The move follows the completion of electrification for the entire 271-km state network. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath confirmed the work. Engineers converted the old diesel-powered units to electric to slash maintenance costs and stop carbon emissions. Officials from the state and railway leadership attended the launch, marking a transition from outdated tracks to high-tech broad-gauge corridors.
