Shillong: The Meghalaya government filed a draft of the Meghalaya Groundwater and Springs (Regulation, Conservation and Management) Bill, 2026, with the High Court on September 5. The move follows a Public Interest Litigation targeting the unchecked drilling of private deep tube wells. These wells often threaten neighborhoods already served by existing municipal water systems.
Advocate General Amit Kumar stated the draft is now circulating among state departments for review. "Advocate General Amit Kumar informed the court that the draft has been circulated to various departments for their suggestions and formal approval." Officials requested four weeks to finalize the legislative process. The court granted the delay.
This law aims to manage the state's dwindling supply. It creates a formal framework to oversee how groundwater and natural springs are used. Officials hope to ensure long-term sustainability across the region.
