Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha launched the Northeast region's first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit train on Saturday. The service departed from Agartala Railway Station. This marks a first for the Northeast Railway zone.

Saha said he recently pushed Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for upgraded transit options. "A few days ago I met the Union Railway Minister and urged him to provide better trains. I had initially asked for a DEMU service, but he informed me that Tripura would be getting something new. Today we are flagging off the MEMU train," he stated.

The state government expects more growth soon. Saha confirmed that officials are working to bring a Vande Bharat service to the region shortly. He touted the impact of the double engine government on local infrastructure. Officials have already electrified 271 km of track in the area.

Other major transit projects remain on the horizon. The Maitri Setu over the Feni River and the Agartala-Akhaura rail link will open soon. Saha also requested a double railway line from the Centre to handle increased capacity. The project survey is finished, and the detailed report is in progress.

Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee attended the event. The state has come a long way since 1964. Leaders now aim to turn Tripura into a major trade gateway.
