Agartala: Tripura has officially issued its first Indian citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act. Two applicants from the North Tripura district, Jhalak Das Chowdhury and Sima Rani Banik, received their documentation following a fully digital application process.
Census Director Ratan Biswas, who chairs the state-level empowered committee, confirmed that 24 applications have been submitted through the federal portal. "We have received a total of 24 applications through the portal, out of which two certificates have been issued, and another is ready for clearance," Biswas stated. Another three applications are currently undergoing a final review by the state committee.
The administrative process functions entirely without physical paperwork. Applications are screened through multiple layers by district-level committees before reaching state authorities. When approvals are finalized, certificates are delivered to beneficiaries via email and mobile devices. Officials noted that some submissions have been returned to the district level to resolve data inconsistencies.
While the rollout continues, the law faces ongoing scrutiny through petitions filed by indigenous organizations in the Supreme Court. Authorities emphasized that areas under the Sixth Schedule autonomous district council remain exempt from the CAA to protect the interests of local tribal communities.
