At this critical juncture, as Manipur continues to endure an unprecedented crisis marked by uncertainty, insecurity, and social fragmentation, various underground groups are actively seeking to influence public opinion and garner support, particularly in the Zeliangrong areas. Amidst this volatile situation, it is deeply concerning to witness certain Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) appearing to align themselves with one side while openly condemning another. Such actions compromise their neutrality and undermine the credibility, integrity, and moral authority that civil society institutions are expected to uphold.
Civil Society Organisations exist to serve the people as independent institutions that bridge the gap between the State and society. Their foremost responsibility is to safeguard public interest, promote justice, encourage dialogue, and foster peaceful coexistence. Their legitimacy rests upon their independence and impartiality. When civil society becomes an extension of competing interests by promoting selective narratives or mobilising public sentiment in favour of particular groups, it ceases to fulfil the very purpose for which it exists.
In this context, the Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi (ZWAD) expresses its deep concern over the recent/ongoing tensions between the ZUF and NSCN-IM. It is regrettable that some civil society platforms are being perceived as partisan participants rather than impartial facilitators of dialogue and reconciliation.
ZWAD firmly believes that dialogue, democratic engagement, and peaceful coexistence remain the only sustainable path to resolving disputes, whether among ourselves or with our neighbouring communities. At a time when our people face genuine external challenges concerning our collective rights and ancestral lands, it is unfortunate that internal rivalries are increasingly consuming our attention. The recurring media statements and competing narratives appear less focused on resolving issues and more on securing public support. Such developments weaken our collective strength, and the right-thinking educated younger generation can clearly distinguish between genuine leadership and partisan advocacy.
Therefore, ZWAD humbly appeals to all Civil Society Organisation leaders across the Zeliangrong region, particularly in Manipur, to reflect upon the solemn responsibility entrusted to them. Leadership demands wisdom, restraint, fairness, and moral courage. Every public statement and every action should contribute to healing rather than division, dialogue rather than confrontation, and unity rather than discord. Let us rise above factional interests and reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, justice, unity, and the collective future of the Zeliangrong people.
