Agartala: The Tripura government has introduced four new welfare projects this financial year to curb child marriage and bolster social development. Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy announced these initiatives as part of a broader strategy to enhance child protection across the state.
As part of the modernization efforts, the government converted 100 Anganwadi centres into English-medium facilities. Officials also upgraded 562 existing locations to serve as model centres. To address gaps in tribal regions, the administration opened 226 new centres, including 119 facilities launched under the Dharti Aba Janajati Abhiyan project.
The government is actively fighting child marriage through the Chief Minister's Kanya Bivah Yojana, which provided Rs 50,000 to 45 beneficiaries this year. Another 105 girls received support through fixed deposits under the Chief Minister's Balika Samriddhi Yojana. Looking ahead, the state plans to build a dedicated recreation centre for persons with intellectual disabilities at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
Minister Roy highlighted that Tripura maintains a robust support system for its workforce, stating, "Anganwadi workers in Tripura receive higher honorariums than their counterparts in 20 other states." He confirmed that recent payment delays were resolved and noted that over 1,34,000 residents currently receive monthly aid through the National Social Assistance Programme.
