Agartala: Tripura authorities have granted Indian citizenship to two individuals under the Citizenship Amendment Act, marking the first successful applications in the state. Officials report that more than 20 applications have been submitted, with many currently moving through various stages of the verification process.

The state handles these applications through an entirely digital system. District authorities perform initial checks before sending eligible files to a state-level committee for final review. Recently, officials noted that six applications reached an advanced stage, though three were returned for further clarification due to identified discrepancies.

Of those remaining, two applicants have officially received their citizenship certificates. One recipient, Jhalak Das Chowdhury, has already moved forward with the administration to secure an Aadhaar card. A senior official confirmed the outcome, stating, "Of these, two applicants have already been issued citizenship certificates under the provisions of the CAA."

The Citizenship Amendment Act creates a pathway to legal status for specific migrant groups from neighboring countries. While the policy sparked protests from various tribal organizations and remains under legal challenge at the Supreme Court, the government maintains that areas protected by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution remain exempt to preserve the interests of indigenous communities.
