Agartala: Rebati Tripura is back in the classroom. The former BJP lawmaker traded his seat in the Lok Sabha for a teaching position at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School in Agartala. He started his shift on July 20.
Tripura served as the MP for the East Tripura constituency after winning the 2019 general election. The BJP dropped him ahead of the 2024 vote in favor of Kriti Devi Debbarman. She is the sister of Tipra Motha Party chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. Tripura remains on the BJP core committee, but he says he has been sidelined for years.
"For the past two-and-a-half years, I literally had no work as a core committee member of the party. Since I have no specific political assignment right now, I have decided to return to my old profession as a postgraduate teacher in a government-run school," Tripura explained to the press. He holds a postgraduate degree in Political Science and first joined the school staff in 2001.
He is looking for stability. Returning to the government school protects his pension and post-retirement benefits. Tripura plans to stay as long as he feels comfortable, though he might consider voluntary retirement later. Titu Saha, the officiating headmaster, says the school staff and students welcomed him back, noting his dedication to his duties.
