Agartala: Former BJP lawmaker Rebati Tripura is back at the blackboard. He rejoined the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Higher Secondary School in Agartala on July 20. He serves there as a postgraduate teacher of Political Science. It is the same role he held starting in 2001 before his jump into politics in 2014.
Tripura won the East Tripura seat in the 2019 general elections. His stint in the Lok Sabha ended when the BJP gave the 2024 ticket to Kriti Devi Debbarman. She is the sister of Tipra Motha Party chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.
The former MP says he spent two and a half years with nothing to do. He remained on the BJP core committee but felt sidelined. "For the past two-and-a-half years, I literally had no work as a core committee member of the party. Since I have no specific political assignment right now, I have decided to return to my old profession as a postgraduate teacher in a government-run school," he said.
Money played a part in the move. He wants to lock in his post-retirement pension benefits. He might teach indefinitely, though he hinted at future voluntary retirement. Officiating headmaster Titu Saha confirmed the staff and students welcomed him back with open arms.
BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee pushed back against claims the move signals a permanent exit from politics. He insists the party still has plans for the former member. Bhattacharjee claimed Tripura handles tasks for the Janajati Morcha and other undisclosed strategy roles. "It is a welcome step. He is a teacher by profession and since he has time, he should invest it in the professional sphere so that students are not deprived of a good teacher," Bhattacharjee said.
