Agartala: Rebati Tripura is back in the classroom. The former BJP Lok Sabha member returned to his teaching post on July 20. He now works as a Political Science teacher at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School in Agartala. This is a government-aided institution. Tripura previously taught there starting in 2001. He entered politics in 2014 and won the East Tripura seat in 2019.
His return to the desk follows the end of his parliamentary term. The BJP chose Kriti Devi Debbarman, sister of Tipra Motha Party chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, for the 2024 polls. Tripura says the job change provides financial security and a pension. He remains a member of the BJP core committee, though he admits he lacked major party assignments recently. "For the past two-and-a-half years, I literally had no work as a core committee member of the party. Since I have no specific political assignment right now, I have decided to return to my old profession as a postgraduate teacher in a government-run school," he told media.
Tripura denies he has quit politics. He insists his return to teaching is compatible with his party duties. Titu Saha, the school's officiating headmaster, reports that staff and students welcomed him back. Tripura says he will continue to teach as long as he feels comfortable, but he might consider voluntary retirement later. He notes that employees of government-aided schools are allowed to stay involved in political work.
