Agartala: The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council is betting on sports to stop a drug surge. Officials want to keep kids off the streets and onto the field. They are focusing on football, cricket, and volleyball to build discipline.

Runiel Debbarma, the Chief Executive Member, kicked off the Thansa Cup at Khumulwng Stadium. The tournament serves as the administration's primary weapon against substance abuse this year. It also aligns with the broader mission of the Tipra Motha Party to boost community development.

Big cash prizes are on the line. The winner takes home Rs 5 lakh. Runners-up earn Rs 3 lakh, while the third-place team gets Rs 1 lakh. The final match happens on August 19.

Debbarma says the program is a direct response to the drug threat facing the region. "This is the first tournament of this year, the 'Thansa Cup', which we have organized," he said. He expects the games to foster unity and sportsmanship among the youth.
