Agartala: Tripura has reached a major milestone in its transport infrastructure, successfully completing the full electrification of its 271-kilometre railway line extending from Churaibari in the north to Sabroom in the south. This transition from diesel to electric traction, spearheaded by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), positions the state as a leader in sustainable regional transit within the Northeast.
To support this electrical infrastructure, dedicated traction substations have been commissioned across the Unakoti, Khowai, and Gomati districts to provide a reliable energy supply. Following multiple successful trial runs of electric locomotives, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials have confirmed the system is ready for passenger operations. The upcoming MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) services are projected to begin by June 2026, primarily serving the Agartala-Dharmanagar and Agartala-Sabroom corridors.
