Agartala: Tripura has exported Rs 17 crore worth of organic agricultural products to domestic and international markets, according to Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The state is leveraging growing consumer demand for chemical-free goods to improve farmer incomes and soil health through the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region project.

During a review meeting at the Tripura State Agricultural Research Centre, the Minister highlighted a significant increase in organized agricultural groups. “Before 2018, there were only two Farmer Producer Companies in the state. Today, that number has grown to 53,” Nath said. These companies are central to the state's strategy for better market access and value addition.

The government is currently rolling out a Rs 234-crore project, backed by the Union government and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, to upgrade processing facilities and marketing infrastructure. The state is focusing on the cultivation of various high-demand crops, including Kalikhasa and Harinarayan rice, scented lemon, bird’s eye chilli, ginger, sesame, and both Queen and Kew pineapples.

As part of the export initiative, officials recently flagged off one metric tonne of premium Queen pineapples, produced by the Bokhari Organic Producers of Mandai, for delivery to New Delhi. To further build on this momentum, the state plans to observe International Pineapple Day in the national capital on June 27.
