Tiger sighting sparks alarm at abandoned Assam mill

Guwahati: Residents of Margherita in Assam’s Tinsukia district reported a tiger roaming the grounds of the abandoned A'R and T Company Limited Veneer Mill on June 20. The predator entered the site during the day and killed a goat, causing immediate fear among those living nearby.

As locals gathered to sound the alarm, the tiger moved back into the surrounding forest. The century-old mill, which has been closed for years, has become overgrown with dense vegetation that now serves as a potential habitat for wild animals. The proximity of the animal to a populated town has raised urgent questions regarding public safety and human-wildlife conflict.

Officials from the Margherita East Range Forest Office and local police arrived shortly after the incident to secure the perimeter. Authorities have advised the public to stay alert and avoid isolated areas or thick brush until the animal's movements are confirmed. Forest officials are currently monitoring the situation to ensure community safety. Reflecting on the impact of the encounter, the incident has left the town on edge as locals await further updates, with one resident stating that the sighting has caused "panic gripped Margherita town."
