Gangtok: Thieves cleaned out construction sites across Gangtok, making off with materials valued at over ₹68 lakhs. The goods vanished from three spots: the 3rd Mile Petrol Pump, the Army Camp Shopping Complex, and the Tashi View Point. Losses mounted over seven months.

Vikash Sharma, a project manager for Shri Balajee Palace Pvt. Ltd., reported the theft to the police. His company took on the work for contractor Kacho Bhutia. Sharma told authorities an internal check exposed that "illegal persons entering the site" were behind the disappearing stock.

The haul was massive. Thieves snatched 1,500 boxes of tiles and 35,000kg of steel worth nearly ₹20 lakhs. They also cleared out 2,500 bags of cement and various sanitary and electronic goods. Police opened a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officers are hunting for the suspects now.
