Tear Gas Fired Near Imphal Hospital During Protests Against Kuki Patient Admissions

Imphal: Security forces deployed tear gas outside the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal on Tuesday night as demonstrators gathered to demand the transfer of three injured Kuki patients. The crowd remained at the hospital until 10 pm, insisting that the patients be removed immediately following their admission after a gunfight in Kangpokpi district.

Protesters met with hospital authorities earlier in the evening, where they were told that the transfer process was underway and the patients could be moved by midnight. This assurance did not satisfy the demonstrators, who continued their protest and heightened their demands. Earlier in the day, representatives of the groups met with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, who reportedly promised to intervene in the matter.

The unrest stems from broader regional tensions, specifically the recent deaths of six Naga hostages. One protester explained the intensity of the reaction, stating, "The main reason for protesting this time is that people are emotional due to the inhumane killing of six Naga hostages who were abducted by Kuki groups from Leilon Vaiphei Village." The protesters also noted that the bodies of the victims remain at the JNIMS mortuary while they wait for arrests to be made in that case. Noteworthy to mention that the three injured kuki patients are from Leilon Vaiphei, and for the fact that the villagers were reportedly spearheading the abduction of the Nagas where 6 of the Nagas were later found dead with bodies mutilated and beheaded.

Hospital officials have maintained that RIMS is required to treat all patients regardless of the circumstances surrounding their injuries. They continue to emphasize the necessity of keeping medical services running without interruption. Authorities have appealed for peace and restraint as they work to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.
