Imphal: Suspected KNA-B cadres crossed the Myanmar border Wednesday morning and torched 12 houses plus a local market in the Kamjong district. Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing confirmed the attack after reporting that the region remains highly volatile.
Remote villages like Kongkan Thana sit exposed. The area suffers from poor roads and sparse populations. Keishing noted that this makes it an easy target for armed groups operating out of Myanmar, including the KNA-B and the People's Defence Force.
This latest fire follows the destruction of Phaimol village. That site sat empty for weeks before it burned. Kuki Inpi Manipur previously blamed the NSCN-IM and the Shanni Nationalities Army for that incident, but Keishing disputes that claim.
The MLA blasted the military response. He noted that the destroyed site sits only three kilometres from an Assam Rifles post. He asked how the militants could act "right under the nose" of the security forces. Residents have lost faith in the Assam Rifles, leading Keishing to urge the state government to deploy the India Reserve Battalion or other neutral agencies to stop further violence.
