Guwahati: A violent attack in Assam's Nalbari district has resulted in the deaths of both a young student leader and his alleged assailant. Madhurjya Barman, a 19-year-old assistant secretary for the Paschim Nalbari Aanchalik Satra Santha, died after being struck with a machete near Gangapur village on Sunday. Barman was riding a scooter with his cousin when they were ambushed while returning from a book-buying trip in Nalbari town.

Barman's cousin, a Class 11 student, sustained critical injuries during the assault and is currently receiving treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Police identified the attacker as Ashik Ali, also known as Roz Ali. Investigators stated that Ali targeted the pair due to a rejected romantic proposal. The victim had previously rebuffed Ali's advances, and his family had reportedly intervened after Ali made prior threats.

Authorities located Ali on a riverine island in Mukalmua on Monday. During the arrest, the suspect attempted to escape by grabbing a police officer's rifle and opening fire. Officers returned fire, striking Ali in the chest. He was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital.

The killing of Barman has triggered widespread anger in the community. Bhabajit Bezbaruah, vice president of the All Assam Students' Union, condemned the incident and led a protest march through Nalbari to demand accountability for the violence.
