Sushmita Dev’s Exit Sparks Mass Resignation Fears for TMC in Assam

Guwahati: The Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress faces a leadership crisis following the resignation of former Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev. Cachar district president Rajesh Deb announced that her departure has left the party in turmoil, warning that local leaders are now preparing to leave in solidarity.

Dev, who joined the TMC in 2021 after a long tenure with the Congress, confirmed her exit on Wednesday. Following her resignation, she traveled to New Delhi to meet with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a move that has fueled strong speculation regarding her imminent transition to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Rajesh Deb stated that he was personally alerted to the shift by Dev herself. During a discussion with India Today, Deb remarked, "Yesterday, Sushmita contacted me and informed me about her resignation from the party. If there is chaos in the party's main office itself, how can the party function in its other branches? She has already met the Chief Minister of Assam and will now join the BJP. We too will resign from the TMC at all levels in the block within the next one or two days."

The potential loss of Dev, a highly influential political figure in the Barak Valley region, signals a significant blow to the party’s stability in the state. While the TMC has yet to provide an official response, these developments contribute to a broader trend of high-profile departures currently testing the party's organizational strength across India.
