Agartala: Former members of the National Liberation Front of Tripura and the All Tripura Tiger Force have announced a 72-hour rail and road blockade starting June 12. The protest, set to take place in Khowai, Teliamura, and Barmura, stems from frustration over the delayed implementation of a peace accord signed with the Centre and the state government.
Prasenjit Debbarma, a leader for the surrendered militants, stated that the decision follows ignored appeals regarding welfare and rehabilitation. About 1,200 cadres laid down their arms in September 2024 before Chief Minister Manik Saha, following a deal that included a Rs 250 crore package for rehabilitation and the development of indigenous communities.
Debbarma voiced his frustration during an Agartala press conference, stating, "It has been two years since we signed the peace agreement. A package of Rs 250 crore was announced for the welfare of our cadres and tribal people, but nothing has happened so far."
The group also expressed disappointment over the government's lack of communication. They reportedly sought a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah through Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha but received no response. Additionally, Debbarma noted that the government has only processed 79 of the 1,200 surrendered militants, leaving the status of the remaining individuals unresolved. The agitators warn that the blockade will proceed unless the authorities take immediate action to fulfill the terms of the agreement.
