Guwahati: The Supreme Court ordered the Assam government to explain its stance on the bail plea filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta. Mahanta, the chief organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, stands accused in the case linked to the death of Assam music icon Zubeen Garg.

Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Joymalya Bagchi issued the notice this week. They gave the state three weeks to file a formal response. The court will hear the matter again at the end of July. Mahanta took his case to the apex court after the Gauhati High Court denied him relief on May 29. His petition directly challenges that ruling.

The legal fight continues. The Supreme Court took note of the petitioner's arguments before moving forward. During the next session, judges will "examine the submissions of both sides" before reaching a final decision. The outcome of these proceedings will determine if Mahanta walks free while the investigation into the singer's death grinds on.
