Imphal: The Supreme Court has authorized the Manipur government to select a new Director General of Police from outside the state cadre. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued the order on Wednesday, citing the volatile civil and ethnic unrest currently gripping the region.

This decision follows an official request from the state government, which struggled to identify a qualified candidate within its local pool. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that finding an officer with the necessary competence to handle the ongoing crisis had become increasingly difficult.

The current police chief, Rajiv Singh, is an IPS officer from the Tripura cadre whose tenure concludes on May 31. State officials emphasized the urgency of the matter, noting that a successor must be named immediately to maintain order. The court ultimately agreed that the state's unique circumstances justify the departure from standard administrative procedures.
