Student Unions Turn Away Over 200 Undocumented Trucks in Jaintia Hills

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union and the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People conducted a joint operation in the War Jaintia region on Wednesday to address the influx of commercial trucks lacking proper documentation. Activists intercepted more than 200 vehicles arriving from outside the state, ultimately ordering the drivers to return to their places of origin.

Laitphar Syngkrem, president of the KSU West Jaintia Hills unit, emphasized that the lack of regulation for outside traders directly threatens the survival of local workers. He issued a warning to regional quarry owners and exporters to stop assisting undocumented operators, noting that those who continue to facilitate these activities will face consequences for any resulting fallout.

FKJGP general secretary Nangkhraw Rani directed criticism at the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council, asserting that the body has failed to properly regulate non-local commerce. He stated, "These trucks not only violate regulations but also directly hurt the income of local truck owners and drivers."

The organizations attributed their ongoing vigilance to the absence of an Inner Line Permit in the region. Both groups pledged to maintain their monitoring efforts and are calling for more rigorous enforcement of trade laws concerning commercial activity involving non-local operators.
