Kohima officials marked World Rabies Day on September 28 by confirming a new dog shelter will open in the city by mid-October. Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem said the municipal council will soon issue a regulatory order allowing teams to round up dogs roaming free. Owners will shoulder all feeding and maintenance costs for impounded animals, and mandatory vaccination camps are coming to all 19 wards.
Health experts flagged a troubling trend in the local bite statistics. Data from 2021 to 2025 shows rising bite cases, with Dimapur and Kohima hit hardest. Dr. Nounengulie Kire noted that while children under 20 account for the bulk of incidents, many reported stray bites actually involved owned dogs running loose. Officials emphasized that recent rabies deaths stemmed from delays in seeking post-exposure treatment and are pushing for a unified intersectoral approach to hit the national target of zero rabies deaths by 2030.
