Shillong: In honor of World No Tobacco Day, students and staff from St. Dominic Savio Secondary School in Garobadha, Meghalaya, organized a large-scale awareness rally themed Tobacco is Business of Death. The initiative saw approximately 800 participants, including students, teachers, and local community members, march through the town to highlight the severe dangers associated with tobacco consumption and addiction.

The event commenced with a prayer and an introductory address by school authorities before the participants paraded through the main roads of Garobadha. Carrying banners and placards, students raised slogans such as Say No to Tobacco, Choose Life and Protect Health, Protect Life. The march served to educate the public on the detrimental effects of smoking and chewing tobacco, while simultaneously arguing that tobacco industries profit at the expense of human lives.

By engaging with the local population, the students encouraged residents to adopt tobacco-free lifestyles and protect children from secondhand smoke exposure. School officials noted that the rally aimed to transform students into ambassadors of social responsibility and health. The successful event, which drew significant attention from residents, was supported by the Garobadha Out Post, whose personnel managed traffic to ensure the safety of all participants as they traveled from the campus to the local market.

Reflecting on the success of the drive, the school reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to fostering a tobacco-free Meghalaya. The administration expressed gratitude to the community and local authorities for their cooperation, pledging to continue promoting healthy citizenship and awareness among the younger generation.
