Imphal: Manipur BJP legislator Vungzagin Valte will finally be laid to rest this Saturday. His body has been held in a morgue for over four months. The Zomi Coordination Committee held the remains at the District Hospital in Churachandpur to demand accountability for his death.

Valte, a 61-year-old former minister, died in a Gurugram hospital on February 20. He never recovered from a vicious mob attack in Imphal back in May 2023. He served as a three-time legislator for the Thanlon constituency. The violence in Manipur has claimed at least 260 lives to date.

The Zomi Coordination Committee formed to pursue the investigation into his assault. They demanded a probe by the National Investigation Agency or the Central Bureau of Investigation. The group also pushed for a separate administrative status for the Kuki-Zo regions. Valte had previously sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he was "advocating for a separate administrative arrangement for the Kuki-Zo community."

The burial is set for 1.30 pm at a cemetery in Dorcas Veng village. With the transfer of the remains back to the family, the Zomi Coordination Committee has officially finished its work and dissolved. The long wait for his final rites is over.
