Gangtok: Sikkim has officially reached the status of a fully literate state. The announcement took place on Wednesday, May 27, at Manan Kendra in Gangtok during the Sikkim University convocation ceremony.
President Droupadi Murmu attended the event, where she commended the state for reaching this milestone. She noted that the achievement represents a vital step toward social empowerment and inclusive growth through education. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang formalised the declaration under the central government's ULLAS, or Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, initiative.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the literacy mission successfully reached every corner of the state, including remote villages and local gram panchayats. He credited the victory to the collective perseverance of residents across all age groups, many of whom learned to read and write for the first time. He also acknowledged the hard work of volunteer teachers, educators, and officials within the state Education Department.
During his address, the Chief Minister described literacy as the bedrock of equality and progress. He encouraged citizens to continue working together to ensure that educational opportunities remain accessible to everyone, aiming to build a more self-reliant and enlightened Sikkim.
