Gangtok: The International Union for Conservation of Nature named Khangchendzonga National Park one of the world's best managed protected areas. The park is the only Indian site to receive a Good grade in the 2025 global review of natural world heritage sites. This designation confirms the site meets high global benchmarks for biodiversity and conservation.
The park covers 1,784 square kilometers in the Eastern Himalayas. It houses Mount Khangchendzonga, which stands as the third-highest peak on Earth. UNESCO added the area to its World Heritage list back in 2016. It remains protected under the Mixed Heritage Category because of its unique glaciers, meadows, and deep cultural ties. The IUCN report states the site is a 'Best Managed Protected Area' within its global review.
