Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang marked the arrival of Asar 15 by promising to bring new technology to the state's fields. He wants to help farmers grow more food. The state government plans to support modern practices without losing the local traditions that define the Himalayan region.
Known as Ropain Diwas, the festival hits on the 15th day of the Nepali month of Ashadh. It signals the start of the paddy planting season. Tamang sent his best wishes to Nepali-speaking communities both in India and around the globe. He honored the occasion as a celebration of the "labour, dedication, unity, friendship, hope and enthusiasm of farmers."
Farmers are the backbone of food security. Tamang highlighted their massive role in the health of society. The government intends to keep backing the people who work the land.
