Gangtok: The BJP is taking heat from all sides in Sikkim. Both the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha and the Sikkim Democratic Front are targeting the party as local election season approaches. The 2027 Panchayat polls loom large over the Himalayan state.
This friction persists even though the BJP and SKM share a national alliance under the NDA. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and state BJP leader D.R. Thapa recently hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gangtok. They marked fifty years of statehood with projects worth 4,000 crore rupees.
Despite this national cooperation, local ties are fraying. Upper Burtuk MLA Kala Rai confirmed the SKM will run alone in the Panchayat contests. They dropped the partnership used in recent municipal races.
The opposition is also swinging hard. SDF president and former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling spoke at a Jorethang event. He warned voters against the rise of the BJP. He urged the public to protect their peace, adding, "If the BJP were to come to power," the state could become "another Manipur."
Observers see a tough road ahead for the BJP. They want to grow in the region but the ruling party and the opposition are pushing back hard. The local political fight is only getting louder.
