Guwahati: Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi faced a harsh reception on August 11 during a tour of flood-ravaged Sivasagar. Residents confronted the Sibsagar MLA over stalled relief efforts and missing government aid. The tension peaked in Ailamukh village, located within the Mogorahat Panchayat.
A resident named Radhika challenged the MLA directly. She slammed the delay in aid delivery and the exclusion of several families from the promised Rs 15,000 compensation package. She also took aim at local party workers for their poor performance on the ground. The district has seen widespread displacement and misery as floodwaters swallow village after village.
Gogoi took the heat in stride. He acknowledged the raw frustration of people who lost everything to the rising water. While his staff felt defensive, the MLA saw the confrontation as a reality check for his office. "My colleagues were upset and angered by the criticism, but I viewed it positively. It was an expression of the pain and anger of flood-hit people," Gogoi stated.
This marks the first time voters have grilled him so intensely during his term. He argues that this kind of feedback keeps politicians tethered to the truth of their constituents. The residents continue to demand better rehabilitation and immediate support as the crisis drags on.
