Guwahati: Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has called for a mass protest in Guwahati on September 23. The demonstration kicks off at 10 am at Chachal. Affected families from Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Charaideo districts are expected to attend alongside party supporters.
Gogoi claims the government failed to distribute promised aid. He demands Rs 10 lakh compensation for every family that lost their home and belongings. His list of grievances includes an end to relief distribution irregularities, immediate aid for all victims, and a full CBI inquiry into the flood causes.
The MLA already took action. He observed a hunger strike on September 17 and submitted a formal memorandum to the Chief Minister. Despite these efforts, he insists that necessary support has not reached the victims. “The main work of a political party is to remain directly connected with the people. After the devastating floods in Upper Assam, our main responsibility as a political party is to stay with the affected people and help them as much as possible,” Gogoi said.
Tension flared recently near the Sivasagar railway station. Local police, railway police, and CRPF personnel allegedly blocked Raijor Dal members and residents from boarding trains to Guwahati. Authorities reportedly demanded Aadhaar cards from all passengers. Some travelers claimed they were barred from boarding even with valid identification.
Gogoi warned that the September 23 event is just the start. If the state government refuses to meet his demands, Raijor Dal will escalate the agitation. He previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government on August 25, threatening a march to the capital if his demands remained ignored.
