Guwahati: Left party workers swarmed Volvo Point in Ulubari on Wednesday, October 7, to demand state action. Hundreds rallied to push for Rs 25 lakh in compensation for each family that lost a loved one during the recent Upper Assam floods. The crowd also demanded immediate financial aid for residents who lost their homes, property, and livelihoods to the disaster.

Protesters want the central government to name the recurring floods a national issue. Tensions boiled over as the demonstration turned into a physical scrap with police. Officers detained several participants after the situation spiraled out of control at the protest site. Footage showed police fighting to hold back the surging crowd.

The group also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Authorities moved the detained activists from the Ulubari site to the Chachal dharna venue. The protesters planned to keep up their pressure, stating, "The protesters were taken from the Ulubari site to the dharna venue at Chachal, where they were expected to continue their demonstration and press for their demands."
