Shillong: Shillong police hauled in 85,000 rupees in fines overnight. The department caught 71 drivers breaking the law during Operation Safer Shillong. The crackdown kicked off at 11 pm Friday and stretched into early Saturday morning.
Officers set up checkpoints at DAD Junction in Rynjah, District Council Point in Lumdiengjri, and Laitumkhrah Market. Special Operations Teams backed the traffic units as they hunted for high-risk behavior. Teams clamped down on drunken driving, rash maneuvers, and illegally modified vehicles. They also checked for valid licenses to ensure compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act.
SP (Traffic) Hari Prasantha, Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg, and Deputy SP (Traffic) David Marak led the operation. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that more enforcement drives are coming to keep the roads safe. Syiem noted, “Operation Safer Shillong will ensure consistent enforcement to deter unsafe driving practices and create safer roads for all road users.”
Syiem thanked locals for their cooperation during the checks. Police plan to hit more spots across the city soon to keep drivers honest. They intend to maintain this pressure to protect motorists and pedestrians alike.
