Shillong Police Net 85,000 in Traffic Crackdown

Shillong: Shillong police hauled in 85,000 rupees in fines after a citywide enforcement blitz this weekend. Officers busted 71 drivers for breaking road laws during Operation Safer Shillong. The crackdown kicked off at 11 pm Friday and lasted until early Saturday morning.

Special Operations Teams held checkpoints at DAD Junction in Rynjah, District Council Point in Lumdiengjri, and Laitumkhrah Market. Cops went after major threats including drunk driving, reckless operation, and illegal vehicle modifications. They also scrutinized driver licenses and vehicle papers to ensure compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act.

SP (Traffic) Hari Prasantha, Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg, and Deputy SP (Traffic) David Marak led the operation. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem noted the department plans to hold these checks at strategic points moving forward. Syiem said the initiative reflects the department’s continued focus on stricter traffic enforcement and safer roads across Shillong. He thanked local residents for their help and stated, "The police’s commitment to ensuring fair, professional and consistent implementation of traffic laws in the interest of public safety" remains a top priority.
