Shillong: Shillong held Partition Horrors Remembrance Day at Lok Bhavan on Friday. The event moved beyond politics to focus on the human toll of 1947. Students performed cultural programs while speakers addressed the trauma of displaced families.
Synod College Assistant Professor Dr. David Arnold Kharchandy spoke at the gathering. He argued the partition was not just a political split. It caused mass suffering for Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs alike. Families lost homes and security overnight. Kharchandy warned against viewing the era through a narrow communal lens. He stated that to reduce history to “our people versus their people,” would only prevent younger generations from grasping the real lessons of that time.
The event highlighted the specific impact on the Northeast following the creation of the border with Bangladesh. Kharchandy pushed students to prioritize humanity over borders. He insisted that India’s future relies on democracy, diversity, and constitutional values.
Governor C.H. Vijayashankar hoisted the national flag. Officials from the Arts and Culture Department attended alongside local students. The ceremony served to commemorate the victims and survivors of the violence. It reminded those present that refugees faced years of hardship while building new lives.
