Severe River Erosion Threatens Historic Market and Farmland in Assam

Guwahati: Severe riverbank erosion is ravaging parts of the Goalpara district in Assam as the rising Brahmaputra river swallows agricultural land and threatens essential infrastructure. Areas including Jaleswar Ferry Ghat, Satbhendi, and Takimari are seeing land disappear daily, leaving many farming families in a state of financial uncertainty.

A primary concern for the community is the historic Jaleswar Market. Having served the region for over a century, the site is now directly in the path of the river. Residents warn that the loss of this commercial hub, combined with the destruction of farmland, would lead to profound economic and social instability in the district.

Local families have expressed growing frustration over the lack of government intervention. They specifically criticized Aftab Uddin Mollah, their local MLA, for failing to implement effective protective measures. With the monsoon season nearing and water levels continuing to climb, residents are calling on the government to deploy urgent erosion-control strategies to prevent further devastation before it is too late.
