Imphal: Manipur has gained national acclaim as seven of its artistes were selected for the 2024-25 Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards and the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. The Sangeet Natak Akademi announced the recipients on June 10, highlighting their significant roles in sustaining India's traditional performing arts.
Three artists received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award: Smt. Irengbam Nalini Devi and Smt. Rajkumari Thambalsana Devi for Manipuri dance, and Smt. Lourembam Bedabati Devi for folk music. These honorees will receive a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a tamrapatra, and an angavastram during an upcoming investiture ceremony held by the President of India.
Four younger artistes were selected for the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. This group includes Smt. Phuritshabam Debajani Devi and Shri Tongbram Roneld Meetei for Manipuri dance, Shri Lukram Tamphamani Singh for music for dance, and Smt. Yumnam Bimota Devi for folk music.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh commended the awardees for their hard work and dedication. In a statement, he noted that this national recognition "reflects the immense contribution of the artistes towards safeguarding traditional art forms and enriching India's cultural landscape." He added that their success serves as a source of pride and inspiration for future generations in the state.
